Below is a list of past and present courses and workshops we have run:

Drum workshops

Based on the success of the Skinner Street school workshops (see below), Sunlight was asked to provide a similar course for Byron Road school throughout February 2009.

A one off session for 11 - 15 years was run at Sunlight in the Summer holidays 2008 which involved students learning about different acoustic drums and electronic sample pads. We covered basic rhythms, playing as a group and created a basic Samba piece.

In November 2008 we were asked to provide 3 sessions of percussion workshops for 5 - 11 year olds at Skinner Street primary school. This was part of their after school activities club.

The course covered learning 2 pieces of percussion, playing as a group and solo and composing their own piece of percussion music.

Guitar Lessons

Through 2007/8 we ran weekly Beginners Guitar Lessons for 5 - 15s on Friday afternoons. It was open to any students in the local area who wanted to learn at a beginners level.

These sessions are no longer running but if you are interested in learning, please get in touch and we will let you know when new sessions are being planned.

Free Beginners Guitar Workshop

This course was designed to give 10 - 16 year olds a taster of the instrument without the commitment to a full time tutor. It was held over 4 weekly sessons, all of which were well received.

Recording and Mixing Workshops

On two separate days students were invited to learn all the basic skills of recording and mixing music in a professional recording studio.

It was delivered mostly in a practical format with references to technical theory along the way.

At the end of both workshops the students not only walked away with CDs of their own music but had also seen the whole process from recording to mastering.

The above two courses were funded by local school New Brompton College.
The latter was for students of Robert Napier School, Gillingham.

Shout Out

Shout Out is a self advocacy group for adults with learning disabilities. This group was set up in August 2006 and still going strong. Along the way the grop has invloved Sunlight Studios in recording and video projects.

The first project involved members creating a piece of music expressing their feelings and the struggles they encounter in society using percussion, drums, keyboards, singing and lyric-writing techniques. A finished CD of the Shout Out song is available for £4.00 by contacting us here.

We are currently piecing together footage for a promotional film of the group for potential new members, to be used in training for service providers and to help inspire other groups to form around the country and beyond. You can visit the group's webspace here

Medway YOT Music Workshops

A six week programme hosted and tutored by staff from Medway Young Offenders Team and Sunlight Studios to promote group work and confidence through the teaching of music fundamentals.

New Brompton College Collaborations

Local school children were involved in a music composition course which included forming a group which then performed and recorded their music in the studio.

SAST

An acronym for Sunlight And Schools Against Truancy, which last month began to tackle the problem of local truants and expelled children by engaging
them in positive activities - one of which being the creation of a piece of music in the studio.

After a successful trial run, the programme is now ongoing involving many of the centre's services and facilities.
