Frequently Asked Questions

What is parentis?

Parentis provides parenting courses and support for local parents and carers in Medway. This service is provided by Sunlight Social Enterprises in partnership with the local authority, NHS and the voluntary and community sector.

Are the courses aimed at any particular religion or group?

No. Classes are open to all parents and carers in Medway.

Do I have to attend all the sessions?

No, but it’s best to attend as many as you can - the more you put in, the more you’ll benefit from the new ideas you’ll learn from each other.

Do I have to talk and join in?

Nobody is going to force you to speak, but actually sharing your experiences can be valuable to other group members and vice versa.

Will any information be shared outside the group?

There is a commitment to ensure that discussions within the group remain confidential. However, if there are any concerns that children may be at risk, information would need to be passed onto the relevant authorities. However, in this instance, issues would be discussed on a one-to-one basis and no information would be shared without your knowledge.

What if, after a couple of weeks, the course is not for me?

It is entirely your choice if you decide not to complete the course – however, we would suggest that your first step is to talk to the group leader about any concerns. It might be that a different course or service would support your individual needs better. In either case, whether you continue with Parentis or move on to other things, your feedback is very valuable to us.

What if I don’t get on with the other members of the group?

The group leaders will ensure that throughout the sessions, you get to talk to and work in small groups with as many other parents as possible. If you have concerns, talk to your group facilitators in the first instance.

Can I bring a friend or social worker?

You can bring a friend or relative for additional support, Social workers or other practitioners may ot attend, although may accompany a parent or carer until arrival at the venue.

Who are the group leaders and is their training endorsed in any way?

Group leaders are local voluntary and statutory sector practitioners and volunteers, all of whom have been CRB checked and specifically trained to run parenting groups. The training meets the National Occupational Standards for working with parents and the programme is supported by Medway PCT, Medway Council, Sure Start, Medway Positive Parenting Network, NSPCC.

What if I’ve got concerns about the way a course is being delivered or the content of the course? What can I do?

Initially, talk to your group leader about it. If you are not comfortable to talk to your leader, you can telephone, e-mail or write to the main office confidentially. Your feedback is extremely important – your worries or concerns are ours also. Whether good or bad, we really want you to share your thoughts with us as this helps us get it right and make sure we are meeting the needs of local parents and carers.

I don’t have children – can I still come?

Existing parents/carers are given priority access. Courses are designed to enable parents to try out new ideas at home and share their experiences with the rest of the group. If you are not currently a parent or carer of children then it is best to talk to the programme manager first to discuss your individual needs.

I don’t have children, but am pregnant – can I come?

Baby Massage and Toddler & Tantrum Toolkit may be suitable if you are over 6 months pregnant. In the first instance, it is best to telephone the main office to discuss your situation and needs.

How do I book onto a course?

Contact the main Parentis office to check availability of places on your chosen course. We will then make a note of your name, address and telephone number and other basic information to register you on the course. We will send you a letter, confirming your place and the dates, time and venue of your chosen course. We will also send you a map and directions to the venue.

You then turn up on the day – it’s as simple as that!
