Medway Dementia Advisors launch

By: Chris White

On 13th May 2010 an exciting new project to provide guidance for people living with dementia was launched at Sunlight. Partly linked to the fact that many of us are living longer, the number of people diagnosed each year with dementia in Medway is increasing. There is an awareness that some people find it difficult to get the help they need at times along their journey with this terrible condition.

The Medway Dementia Advisors service is funded by Medway Council and NHS Medway. The team include four dedicated and well trained specialists who are linked to all the available information and local services. They are there to help people with dementia and carers, family members and friends. The aim is to help people live well with dementia, by making the correct information accessible at the right time to people in Medway who are living with the condition.

The hall was packed at the launch with key service providers, support groups and people living with dementia personally or within their family. There were several moving speeches and encouraging information demonstrating early successes from this pioneering approach. The enthusiasm of the representatives from Medway Council and NHS Medway electrified the launch. Their desire to join associated services and information through the Medway Dementia Advisors will help form a foundation for the service.
