Community Gardens

Sunlight Trust has two gardens that are open to the community. The Wild and Recycled Garden is on Otway Street in Gillingham and is open on Wednesdays between 10am and 2pm. High Hopes Garden is behind the Sunlight Centre and is open on Thursdays between 10am and 2pm.

Community gardening is a wonderful way for older and/or isolated people to stay active, engaged, and connected, improving their physical, mental, and social well-being. Here are some key advantages:

  • Connection to Nature: Gardening allows individuals to connect with nature, which has been shown to have therapeutic effects
  • Mobility: Gardening involves physical activities like digging, planting, and weeding, which help improve strength, flexibility, and endurance
  • Health Improvements: Regular gardening can reduce the risk of chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis
  • Stress Relief: Being in nature and engaging in gardening activities can lower stress levels and improve mood
  • Cognitive Stimulation: Planning and maintaining a garden can keep the mind active, helping to prevent cognitive decline
  • Social Interaction: Community gardens provide a space for socializing, reducing feelings of loneliness and isolation
  • Sense of Belonging: Participating in a gardening group fosters a sense of community and belonging, which is crucial for mental health
  • Self-Esteem: Successfully growing plants and contributing to a community garden can boost self-esteem and provide a sense of accomplishment
